The Kano State Government has taken legal action against the immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, along with his Commissioner for Local Government, Murtala Garo, and two others1. The charges stem from alleged financial misconduct involving a staggering N57.4 billion.
The accused individuals are charged with criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, making false statements or returns, and criminal misappropriation. Specifically, they are accused of mismanaging the 44 Local Government’s statutory allocations remitted to the State Joint Local Governments account from the Federation Account. The state alleges that they diverted N57.4 billion through various personal accounts of local government cashiers and other personal and corporate accounts.
The state government further claims that the accused transferred some of the funds into dollars for their personal benefit. Notably, they acquired a service apartment in Dubai, a commercial apartment in Tigerwood, and a multi-billion-naira hotel in Abuja. Additionally, they own filling stations in Kano.
The state intends to call 143 witnesses during the trial.
