A Michigan judge is making headlines once again for his handling of an unruly defendant. During a pre-trial hearing for a trespassing case, 45-year-old Darrell Lester Jarrell lashed out at Judge J. Cedric Simpson.
Jarrell, who lacks email or a phone number and can only be contacted via P.O. box, grew impatient during the hearing. He expressed frustration, saying he was “ready to leave this state as soon as possible.” In a heated moment, Jarrell told the judge, “It’s trespassing. I can technically leave—and you guys can issue a warrant—as long as I don’t return… kiss my ass.”
Judge Simpson firmly replied, “No. No. No. You don’t come up in here.” Jarrell continued to curse at the judge, leading to a contempt of court charge. Simpson sentenced him to 93 days in jail for the profanity.
Jarrell’s outburst didn’t end there. He kept swearing, and by the end of the proceeding, he received a whopping 558 days in jail.
This isn’t the first time Judge Simpson’s courtroom has gone viral. In May, Corey Harris faced the judge virtually for driving on a suspended license. When asked if he was driving, Harris replied, “I’m pulling into my doctor’s office, actually.” Simpson promptly sent him to jail.
Judge Simpson’s no-nonsense approach has caught the attention of many. While we can’t comment on pending cases, it’s clear that his courtroom commands respect.
