Port Harcourt, Rivers State – August 8, 2024

Former local government chairmen in Rivers State have accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of sponsoring a violent attack on the Port Harcourt house of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The incident occurred during a nationwide hunger protest.

Hunger protesters marched to Nyesom Wike’s residence along Ada George Road in Port Harcourt. They laid siege to the mansion, chanting war songs and expressing their grievances against the ex-governor. Policemen were present to prevent the protesters from invading the property.

The former local government chairmen, elected during Wike’s tenure, claim that Governor Fubara sponsored the ruffians who attacked Wike’s house. Dr. Chidi Lloyd, a former Chairman of the Emuoha Local Government Area, stated that Fubara directed the protesters to Wike’s residence. The chairmen also threatened to mobilize their own men to attack Fubara’s properties.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, dismissed the allegations. He called the former chairmen “ordinary citizens” and stated that they were meddling in matters beyond their tenure. Johnson emphasized that the protesters had walked past the FCT Minister’s house without incident.

In summary, tensions between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike have escalated, with accusations flying regarding the hunger protest and property attacks. The situation remains volatile, and authorities are closely monitoring developments1.
