Israeli Defense Minister Warns Lebanon Amid Escalating Tensions

Tel Aviv, August 8, 2024
— Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a stern warning to Lebanon as tensions along the border continue to escalate.

The Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon poses a significant threat. Israeli intelligence suggests that Hezbollah may attempt to target a senior Israeli official in retaliation for the killing of their commander, Fuad Shukr, on July 301.

Israel’s security cabinet convened in Tel Aviv to prepare for potential attacks. The meeting took place in an underground command room at the Kirya military headquarters, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. This move comes after Iran’s recent threats and high-profile assassinations1.

In an unprecedented move, Minister Gallant addressed the Lebanese people directly in Arabic. He emphasized Israel’s desire for peace and stability but warned that any aggression from Hezbollah would be met with force. Gallant invoked the memory of the 2006 Second Lebanon War, urging caution against playing with fire1.

Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav highlighted the advanced capabilities of Hezbollah’s missile arsenal. He warned that the group could potentially fire up to 4,000 missiles at Israel daily, far more precise and powerful than during the previous conflict1.
