Abuja, August 13, 2024 – President Bola Tinubu, in a significant move toward energy efficiency and cost savings, inaugurated 30 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses in Abuja. These locally-manufactured buses, donated by the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), have the capacity to transport 3,000 passengers.
President Tinubu emphasized that utilizing natural gas for transportation would reduce costs, enhance productivity, and save trillions of naira spent on importing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
Countries like India have successfully mandated CNG for commercial vehicles since 2004. Nigeria, where commercial vehicles account for about 80 percent of petroleum demand, can benefit significantly from this solution.
The manufacturer of these CNG buses, Innoson Motors, received commendation for its commitment to the CNG initiative.
